Friendsgiving Recipe and Tips For a Great Get Together | Stroller in the City (2024)

Friendsgiving tips are what we’re talking about today. This fun take on Thanksgiving has really taken hold across the country, and it’s not hard to see why. Most of us have friends who we already considered family, so why not host a get-together honoring them and showing them how thankful we are to have them in our lives? After all, in many cases, they’re just as important to us as our blood relatives. I’m super excited to share some Friendsgiving tips I’ve learned over the years to make this special event the best it can possibly be.

First thing’s first. Before decor, lighting, or anything else, make sure you have enough food and drink. Nothing kills a get-together like running out of food and beverages.Along the same lines as making sure you have enough food, make your Friendsgiving a potluck affair. Everyone brings their favorite dish, which ensures that there is plenty of food – and bonus – much less cleanup for the host!

Before we dive deeper into food, let’s think about the decor. I’ve always felt that Friendsgiving should be a more laid-back affair. So rather than going all out for a Pinterest-level tablescape and room decor, I like to keep it simple. Things like cute little pumpkins on the table and some fall colored cloth napkins go a long way to creating a festive vibe without getting too fancy.

Speaking of keeping things low key, one of my favorite Friendsgiving tips is to have all your potluck dishes out on the dining room table and kitchen bar. With everything out waiting for everyone to dig in, it keeps the event flowing, festive, and lighthearted. Of course, everyone will just have to find a spot to plop down to eat and talk, but that’s really part of the fun.

The most important of all my Friendsgiving tips is to keep the holiday food tasty and reduce some of the sugar that comes with it. Truvia makes Cane Sugar and Brown Sugar Blends, which are great alternatives that help reduce the amount of sugar in a dish. It’s the perfect replacement in any food or drink in which we’d normally use sugar, from coffee to baked goods and more.

The Sugar Blends even bake and brown like sugar! The Cane Sugar Blend I used in the Apple Cake recipe has 75% fewer calories per serving than regular sugar.

With that, here’s my mama’s famous Apple Cake Recipe that she’s been baking for us for years, perfect for any Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving celebration this season!

Apple Cake Recipe:

5 apples, sliced thin

5 teaspoons of Truvia Cane Sugar Blend

2 tsp cinnamon

Combine and set aside

Cake Mixture:

3 cups flour

1 1/4 cups Truvia Cane Sugar Blend

1/2 tsp salt

4 eggs

1 cup oil

2 tsp vanilla

1/3 cup orange juice

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Mix together: flour, Truvia Cane Sugar Blend, salt, eggs, oil, vanilla, and orange for about three minutes.

Next add in your baking soda and baking powder.

Layer in a greased angel cake pan 1/3 batter, 1/2 apples, 1/3 batter, 1/2 apples, 1/3 batter.

Bake 1 1/2 hours at 350 degrees. Cool in pan and remove to plate for serving.

We’re hosting Friendsgiving on Saturday and I can’t wait. Since many of us have switched to healthier eating this year, I love the idea of using Truvia to help cut down on the calories in our baked goods. Your cake looks simply scrumptious!

I used to invite all the single soldiers over to our house when I was married to my first husband. We didn’t have a lot but I didn’t want anyone to have to sit at home all alone during the holidays. This is the first year, that I am clueless about how I want to spend Thanksgiving this year. Divorce is so hard but so necessary sometimes. I just feel like the jerk and I’m not. I’ll more than likely be alone this year and it’s a hard pill to swallow. But hopefully, I can spend some time with friends or something.

Being a military family I feel like Friendsgiving is built into our culture as so many of us just can’t get home for Thanksgiving, especially if we are trying to get home for Christmas. Being thousands of miles from home makes us form lasting relationships with others in our situation. Friends matter just as much as family!
