Fun Edible Pirate Map Quesadillas Recipe (2024)

Serve up an edible pirate treasure map for extra special fun pirate party food for kids!

These fun treasure map quesadillas are easy to make and perfect for popping in a lunch box as well as for fun pirate themed party food or snacks.

If you follow Eats Amazing over on Instagram you may have seen the pirate treasure map lunches that I made for my boys and shared in my Instagram stories a few weeks ago. I had so many positive messages and comments about them that I decided to make a tutorial video for these fun and easy pirate quesadillas.

You don't need to be fantastic artist to create these fun edible treasure maps, after all, pirates aren't exactly renowned for their artistic skills! Just sketch out some rough coastlines, add some dotted lines for paths, squiggly lines for water, then simple features like palm trees, hills, mountains, rocks and a shark fin or two.

If you're feeling adventurous, add a compass and maybe a sea creature or two (my attempt was supposed to be some kind of octopus, in case you were wondering!). Most importantly though, don't forget to add your 'X' to mark the treasure spot!

Edible Pirate Map Quesadillas

Ingredients (serves 2):

• ¼ yellow pepper
• 2 spring onions
• 2 slices ham
• 2 tortilla wraps
• 1 Tbsp red pesto
• handful grated cheese*
• red food colouring
• black edible food writer pen

Method:

Cut a large slice from the yellow pepper. Using a mini circle cutter, cut round 'coins' from the pepper for pirate treasure. Finely chop the leftover pepper scraps and set aside.

Top and tail the spring onion and finely slice, then slice the ham into small pieces.

Place one of the tortilla wraps in a dry frying pan. Spread the pesto over the tortilla, then scatter over the chopped yellow pepper, spring onion and ham.

Sprinkle over a generous handful of grated cheese, ensuring that it is evenly spread across the whole tortilla.

Add a pile of yellow pepper coins for pirate treasure, then pop the second tortilla over the top to cover.

Dry-fry the tortilla for a couple of minutes until the base is lightly golden. Once the base is cooked, carefully flipthe quesadilla over in the pan to cook on the other side (use a plate to make this easier!). Cook for a few minutes more until the cheese is melted and the quesadilla cooked through, then carefully slide the quesadilla from the frying pan onto a cooling rack.

Leave the quesadilla for a few minutes until cool enough to handle.

Using the red food colouring and a clean paint brush, paint an X onto the treasure map, marking the spot over the yellow pepper coins if possible.

With the black edible food writer pen, sketch out a treasure map over the rest of the quesadilla.

Once the treasure map is finished and all of the food colouring is dry, use a large sharp knife to cut the quesadilla into pieces.

Serve and enjoy!

*NOTES: I used grated cheddar, but other cheeses such as mozzarella or a hard goats cheese also work well.

The quesadillas can be served warm or cold. Make sure you cool them fully before packing if serving in a lunch box. (keep your eyes peeled for our full pirate lunch box tutorial coming soon!)

Feel free to switch up the fillings in your quesadillas - alternative fillings you could use include;
Chopped veggies– red onion, red or green peppers, spinach, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, sweetcorn, peas, cooked broccoli, finely chopped cooked potato, sweet potato or squash.
Cooked meat– chorizo, pepperoni, shredded chicken, bacon or sausage.
